Reflexivity and the Crisis of Western Reason

Author: Barry Sandywell
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 0415087562
Release Date: 1996
Genre: Social Science

This ground-breaking work, the first in a series of volumes, explores the genealogical analysis of the discourses of reflection. Barry Sandywell traces the differences between the traditional discourses of reflection and the experiences of reflexivity in everyday, social and philosophical thought. The central contention of Sandywell's argument is that in order to begin to address these types of questions we must first explore the force field between the discourses of reflection and reflexivity. To do so requires radical self-investigations of the role of reflexivity in human experience, and more especially of the role of the languages, practices, and institutions of self-reflection within the fabric of Western culture. Consequently, these 'logological investigations' introduce a method of analysis which traces the epochal movement of thought from a videological to a dialogical conception of the world. In doing so they introduce some of the preliminary work necessary for more detailed studies of premodern, modern, and postmodern forms of reflexivity in the subsequent volumes. Brilliantly organized and abounding with astonishing insights, Volume 1 offers a fundamental challenge to our normal ways of viewing social thought.

Dictionary of Visual Discourse

Author: Barry Sandywell
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 9781317151067
Release Date: 2016-04-22
Genre: Art

This substantial and ambitious dictionary explores the languages and cultures of visual studies. It provides the basis for understanding the foundations and motivations of current theoretical and academic discourse, as well as the different forms of visual culture that have come to organize everyday life. The book is firmly placed in the context of the 'visual turn' in contemporary thought. It has been designed as an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary introduction to the vocabularies and grammars of visuality that inform thinking in the arts and humanities today. It also offers insight into the philosophical frameworks which underpin the field of visual culture. A central theme that runs throughout the entries is the task of moving away from a narrow understanding of visuality inherited from traditional philosophy toward a richer cultural and multi-sensorial philosophy of concrete experience. The dictionary incorporates intertextual links that encourage readers to explore connections between major themes, theories and key figures in the field. In addition the author's introduction provides a comprehensive and critical introduction which documents the significance of the visual turn in contemporary theory and culture. It is accompanied by an extensive bibliography and further reading list. As both a substantive academic contribution to this growing field and a useful reference tool, this book offers a theoretical introduction to the many languages of visual discourse. It will be essential reading for graduate students and scholars in visual studies, the sociology of visual culture, cultural and media studies, philosophy, art history and theory, design, film and communication studies.

Occupational Therapies without Borders Volume 2 E Book

Author: Frank Kronenberg
Publisher: Elsevier Health Sciences
ISBN: 9780702049118
Release Date: 2011-10-24
Genre: Medical

The companion text to Occupational Therapy without Borders - Volume 1: learning from the spirit of survivors! In this landmark text writers from around the world discuss a plurality of occupation-based approaches that explicitly acknowledge the full potential of the art and science of occupational therapy. The profession is presented as a political possibilities-based practice, concerned with what matters most to people in real life contexts, generating practice-based evidence to complement evidence-based practice. As these writers demonstrate, occupational therapies are far more than, as some critical views have suggested, a monoculture of practice rooted in Western modernity. Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu captures the ethos of this book, which essentially calls for engagements in the service of a purpose that is larger than the advancement of our profession's interests: "Your particular approach to advancing our wellbeing and health strikes me as both unique and easily taken for granted. Whilst you value and work with medical understandings, your main aim seems to go beyond these. You seem to enable people to appreciate more consciously how what we do to and with ourselves and others on a daily basis impacts on our individual and collective wellbeing. As occupational therapists you have a significant contribution to make [.] allowing people from all walks of life to contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of others." Links philosophy with practical examples of engaging people in ordinary occupations of daily life as a means of enabling them to transform their own lives Includes contributions from worldwide leaders in occupational therapy research and practice Describes concrete initiatives in under-served and neglected populations Looks at social and political mechanisms that influence people’s access to useful and meaningful occupation Chapters increase diversity of contributions – geographically, culturally and politically Emphasis on practice, education and research maintains academic credibility A glossary and practical examples in nearly every chapter make text more accessible to students

Briefe

Author: Georg Cantor
Publisher: Springer-Verlag
ISBN: 9783642743443
Release Date: 2013-03-08
Genre: Mathematics
