The Auschwitz Sonderkommando

Author: Nicholas Chare
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783030114916
Release Date: 2019
Genre: HISTORY

This book is the first to bring together analyses of the full range of post-war testimony given by survivors of the Sonderkommando of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Auschwitz Sonderkommando were slave labourers in the gas chambers and crematoria, forced to process and dispose of the bodies of those who were murdered. They have been central to a number of key topics in post-war debates about the Shoah: collaboration, moral compromise and survival, resistance, representation, and the possibility of bearing witness. Their testimony however has mostly met with a reluctance to engage in depth with it. Moving from testimonies produced within the event, the Scrolls of Auschwitz and the Sonderkommando photographs, to testimonies given at trials and for video archives, and to the paintings of David Olère and the film Shoah by Claude Lanzmann, this book demonstrates the importance of their witnessing in the post-war memory of the Holocaust, and provides vital new insights into the questions of representation, memory, gender, and the Shoah.

Electromagnetic Fields in Mechatronics Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Author: A. Krawczyk
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9781607501824
Release Date: 2006-08-15
Genre: Science

More and more researchers engage into investigation of electromagnetic applications, especially these connected with mechatronics, information technologies, medicine, biology and material sciences. It is readily seen when looking at the content of the book that computational techniques, which were under development during the last three decades and are still being developed, serve as good tools for discovering new electromagnetic phenomena. It means that the field of computational electromagnetics belongs to an application area rather than to a research area. This publication aims at joining theory and practice, thus the majority of papers are deeply rooted in engineering problems, being simultaneously of high theoretical level. The editors hope to touch the heart of the matter in electromagnetism. The book focuses on the following issues: Computational Electromagnetics; Electromagnetic Engineering; Coupled Field and Special Applications; Micro- and Special Devices; Bioelectromagnetics and Electromagnetic Hazard; and Magnetic Material Modeling.

Variable Income Equivalence Scales

Author: Carsten Schröder
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Release Date: 2012-12-06
Genre: Business & Economics

1.1 A Brief Overview An extensive body of empirical and theoretical literature deals with the mea surement of social welfare. This body can be decomposed in several different but related topics, all of which have implications for empirical studies in wel fare economics. One of these topics are household equivalence scales which help to compare welfare levels across households that differ in composition. An equivalence scale relates the income of any arbitrary household type to the income ofa referencehouseholdsuch that both households are equally well-off. Differences in household needs arise from differences in the households' de mographic composition which is, for instance, given by the number, age, and sex of the household members. The increase of household needs is not neces sarily proportional to the increase in the number of household members. Such a non-proportionality, for example, results from differences in the needs of adults and children, economies ofscale arising from the division of fixed costs among the household members, welfare gains from household production, and from common consumption ofcommodities bearing a within-household public good component.

Asset Market Participation Monetary Policy Rules and the Great Inflation

Author: Florin Bilbiie
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN:
Release Date: 2006-09-01
Genre: Inflation (Finance)

This paper argues that limited asset market participation is crucial in explaining U.S. macroeconomic performance and monetary policy before the 1980s, and their changes thereafter. We develop an otherwise standard sticky-price dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model, which implies that at low asset-market participation rates, the interest rate elasticity of output (the slope of the IS curve) becomes positive - that is, "non-Keynesian." Remarkably, in that case, a passive monetary policy rule ensures equilibrium determinacy and maximizes welfare. Consequently, we argue that the policy of the Federal Reserve System in the pre-Volcker era, often associated with a passive monetary policy rule, was closer to optimal than conventional wisdom suggests and may thus have remained unchanged at a fundamental level thereafter. We provide institutional and empirical evidence for our hypothesis, in the latter case using Bayesian estimation techniques, and show that our model is able to explain most features of the "Great Inflation."

Portfolio Choice Liquidity Constraints and Stock Market Mean Reversion

Author: Alex Michaelides
Publisher:
ISBN: UVA:X006128463
Release Date: 2001
Genre: Investment analysis

This paper solves numerically for the optimal consumption and portfolio choice of an infinitely lived investor facing short sales and borrowing constraints, undiversifiable labour income risk and a predictable time varying equity premium. The investor aggressively times the market while positive correlation between permanent earnings shocks and stock return innovations generates a substantial hedging demand for the riskless asset. Moreover, a speculative increase in savings arises when stock returns are expected to be high and conversely when future returns are expected to be low. Small information/optimization costs can make it optimal for an investor to assume i.i.d excess stock returns, both because liquidity constraints can be frequently binding and because households can smooth idiosyncratic earnings shock using a small buffer stock of wealth.
